If you tried to make a runeword and it didn't work, post it here. If you want to understand why, hopefully someone helps you figure out why. Make sure you followed the following directions to making a runeword correctly.
-It cannot be a magical (blue or yellow) item. Magical items CAN have multiple sockets, but that doesn't mean you can make runewords in them
-Check that the base is the correct base required.
Some runewords require specific types of items, particularly weapons. Also, some items, like Scepters & Hammers being labeled Mace Class, are labeled in a misleading way. So trying to make a Mace Class runeword like Steel will not work in them. Another common misconception is that Spear weapons are Polearms. They are not, and runewords like Infinity and Insight that do not have Spear Class listed as a type will not work in them.
-Check that your runes are in the right order and that you used the correct runes. Io is often confused with Lo, because lower case L's and capital i's in the game look exactly the same. A Lo rune has a capital L, it will not look like a lower case L. Confusing the two is a very expensive mistake.
Lo = Lo
Io - io
-You must use a runeword that requires the exact amount of runes as the amount of sockets in the item. This means that you CANNOT use a runeword like Smoke that requires two runes in an item that has three sockets. You MUST use an item with EXACTLY 2 sockets for Smoke.
-Lastly, I recommend using only Arreat Summits list (Or the ones on this site, as they are taken from Arreat Summit) as your resource for runewords. There are sites that list runewords that are either wrong, misleading, or for certain mods like Median XL only. I have seen quite a few people make failed runewords because their resource mislead them.
