It was my 13th birthday in 2002, when my mother gifted me this game for Playstation. I confess to being disappointed, as I had never heard of this game or the franchise and the front/back of the case didn't sell itself to me either. Nonetheless, I was not an ungrateful child. I immediately popped it in. My first impression that day, after a few hours of playing, was that it wasn't half bad at all. After all, it was satisfying to scar the two-diminsional landscape with comedic explosions and projectiles while sending worms flying into a watery grave. It was also pretty awesome that you could customize both the names of your teams and its members. Each worm had its own identity and that is really what gave it its charm. I liked it a little, but little did I know what memories I'd make with it over the next several years.
Once my older brother and I became decent at it and agreed that it was a great game, we invited our two friends Josh and Tony, who were also brothers, to play it with us.
What ensued was several years of hysterically fun gaming with the four of us. We have memories of banana bomb chaos, hysterical homing pigeon fails, the worm named Saddam that would almost always be last to die on his team, and the catchphrases "IT'S A SUPER SHEEP" and "DIGGIN A DIBBIT" that we still quote to this day.
All in all, it turns out my mom gave me a pretty good 13th birthday present.
